Conservative dentistry

Conservative dentistry, also known as restorative dentistry, is a branch of dentistry focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of dental problems while conserving as much natural tooth structure as possible. The goal of conservative dentistry is to restore and preserve the function, esthetics, and health of the teeth in a minimally invasive manner. Conservative dentistry encompasses various procedures and treatments to address common dental issues, such as dental caries (tooth decay), dental fractures, and tooth wear. Some of the common procedures in conservative dentistry include:

1. Dental fillings: This involves removing decayed or damaged tooth structure and filling the resulting cavity with materials like composite resin, amalgam, or porcelain to restore the tooth’s shape, function, and aesthetics.
 2. Inlays and Onlays: In cases where the damage or decay is extensive but does not require a full dental crown, inlays and onlays are used. These are custom-made restorations that are fabricated in a dental laboratory and then bonded to the tooth to restore its function and strength.
 3. Dental bonding: This technique uses tooth-colored resin materials to repair minor chips, cracks, or gaps in teeth. The resin is applied to the tooth and shaped to match the natural tooth structure, resulting in a seamless restoration.
 4. Dental crowns: When a tooth is extensively decayed or fractured, a dental crown, also known as a cap, is placed over the remaining tooth structure to restore its shape, strength, and function.
 5. Root canal treatment: This procedure is performed when the dental pulp inside the tooth becomes infected or inflamed. The damaged pulp is removed, and the root canal space is cleaned, disinfected, and filled with a biocompatible material to save the tooth from extraction.
 6. Dental bridges: Bridges are used to replace missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth (pontics) to adjacent natural teeth, dental implants, or a combination of both. Conservative dentistry emphasizes preventive measures, such as regular dental check-ups, teeth cleaning, and patient education on proper oral hygiene practices, to maintain oral health and prevent future dental issues. By preserving and restoring natural tooth structure, conservative dentistry aims to provide long-lasting and functional dental solutions while minimizing the need for more invasive procedures.
